Rome, The Eternal City

Rome is an intricate & passionate city with origins in one of the most revered civilizations in history, a culture to rival any in Europe and a cuisine to melt even the most stubborn of taste-buds. For history buffs Rome is the ultimate playground with hours of endless discovery all within 30-minutes of each other, take segway tours, hire a bike or simply wander the streets of Rome.

Using Piazza Venezia as a starting point visitors can wander nearly 3,000 years back in time to explore Rome’s origins from the 7th Century onward. Step into the magnificent Palazzo Venezia, constructed in 1455 by Cardinal Venezia, as the seat of Venice in Rome. Turn the corner and along the cobbled Via dei Fori Imperiali toward the awe-inspiring Colosseum stopping either side of the causeway to admire the beautifully preserved Roman Forum (book advanced tickets online for both to avoid long queues). Stop at one of local cafes for a spot of tortellini al prosciutto and world-famous gelato before setting off for the nearby Trevi Fountain.

October should make Rome less crowded allowing for the ultimate photo-opportunity at the famous fountains, remember to throw a penny (or 3) over your shoulder to return to Rome, new romance and marriage. From here head through the winding streets to stumble across the Pantheon, a memorable location and fitting tribute to the gods warmed by stunning natural sunlight from its rooftop oculus on clear days.

A city in its own right, Vatican City, to the West of Rome’s centre is within walking distance, although bicycles are a much quicker and romantic way to arrive. Heading straight down the Via della Conciliazione the welcoming arms of St Peter’s square greet you as you arrive at St Peter’s Basilica. The utterly remarkable Sistine Chapel is one of histories greatest treasures and cannot be missed (again, be sure to pre-book tickets as crowds soon gather).

If the history of Julius Caeser & Marcus Aurelius or Renaissance style of Michelangelo isn’t for you, Rome offers even more for tourists. Visiting in October coincides with Rome’s International Cinema Festival (Festa Internazionale di Roma) where entertaining delights are in abundance. For sport’s fans Rome is the home of the Italian Rugby Team (The Azzurri) as well as Roma and Lazio professional football teams all of whom ply their trade at the magnificent Stadio Olympico. Be sure to catch a game whilst the team’s in town or if this isn’t for you stop by a local cafe and sample the rich aroma of Italian coffee whilst people-watching modern day Romans.
