Leoniki Residence Upgraded to Village Heights Golf Resort
6,750 eXpectations Points, 15th March 2014, Studio Sleeps 4
Where to stay for the 2nd leg of our journey got me stumped a little. This was partly because of the great choices available and partly because of encountering a mild issue with booking the resort I had originally intended to stay at.
The choices I had ear-marked included resorts in Malta, Rhodes and Cyprus – all of which had some very good offers although I plumped instead to head to the island of Crete.
Like many other Mediterranian Islands, March is still in the off-season and so many attractions and activities probably will not open until Easter. However, the larger towns will still have a lot of life and since there are so many natural and historic sites on Crete, we definitely won’t be stuck for things to see or do!
When scouring RCI’s points website I had originally wanted to book a week at Leoniki Residence (RCI #4836). Not far from Crete’s third largest city of Rethimnon there was a studio apartment sleeping 4 available for just 6,750 points. However, once I went about confirming the booking I was informed that the resort was closed for renovation. The RCI representative explained that I could either go with one of the other options I had looked at in Crete, or, if I sticked with Leoniki I would be moved to another resort, “The Village Heights Golf Resort” (RCI #7514), to a 1 bedroom unit without any additional points charge.
Village Heights Golf Resort
The Village Heights Golf Resort is a newer, Gold Crown resort and also a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence awardee. It would normally cost 15,000 points to stay here (even with the 50% late booking discount applied) so it’s a considerable upgrade as far as the accommodation and resort facilities are concerned. Whether the location is an upgrade is debatable. Personally I would have probably preferred to be a little closer to a larger town this time of year. But, since you’d really want a car to get out and see some of the fantastic sites Crete has to offer, it isn’t all that crucial.
Village Heights has really fantastic feedback from those who have stayed there with over half of those reviewing the resort giving it the highest traveller rating possible. The “Enormous” 1 bedroom apartments have clearly impressed previous guests with some commenting the resort is among the best resorts at which they have stayed. For those who want to pamper themselves, Village Heights has a number of facilities Leoniki does not such as an indoor pool, sauna and spa.
On reflection, if a week in a 1 bedroom had been available here for just 6,750 points to begin with, I would have snapped it up ahead of Leoniki that’s for sure. So, rather than change any arrangements I decided to stick firmly with the booking at Leoniki and the upgrade to The Village Heights Golf Resort.
The birthplace of Zeus and home to the first known European civilisation, Crete is absolutely steeped in ancient history and mythology that you can really get up close and personal with. There’s no end of wonder here we’ll try and partly cover in the coming days.
Apart from some fantastic beaches, there are numerous natural sites to explore and keep you occupied. There are a number of caves and gorges and outdoorsy types will enjoy particularly enjoy the mountain terrain and Samaria Gorge for hiking.
