Paihia – Bay of Islands

Aptly named the Bay of Islands for the 144 distinctive islands that fill this bay it’s an area bursting with beauty and an intricate Maori past waiting for you to discover it. Auckland, home to a 1/3 of New Zealand’s population, is situated just a few hours by car to the South of Piahia if you long for a day in the city but with all this natural local beauty you’d be forgiven for never wanting to leave. To gain an insight into New Zealand’s past a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a must see and is the place where Maori chiefs first met with the British to found what we now know as New Zealand.

A diverse underwater world surrounds the Bay of Islands so take the plunge with a Paihia Dive and explore local shipwreck sites and rich coral reefs up close for yourself. Discover the “hole in the rock” and be amazed by friendly common and bottle-nose dolphins whom you have the chance to jump in and swim with on an abundance of sea-excursions. Further out from the Bay numerous fishing world-records have been set, particularly for Striped Marlin and Yellow Tail Kingfish, think you can take on these powerful creatures?

You’ll find the famous 90-mile beach that doubles as a highway on the North-Eastern tip of New Zealand, which is in fact only 88km long but is still a strikingly beautiful sight nonetheless! Active visitors to the Northland are sure to be impressed by the Twin Coast Cycle Trail which runs from Hokianga Harbour through rural farmland and an area of rich culture before joining up with the Bay of Islands at Opua. If you have the kids in tow then they are sure to love the Action World adventure park where high wires and numerous soft play areas are at their finger tips for a fun-packed family day-out!
