The Historic Centre of Vienna should be the starting point for any visit to this culturally intriguing city. Wander along historic streets where traditional & contemporary architecture go hand in hand, visit the multitude of museums paying homage to the city’s rich culture and sample delicious Wiener Schnitzel.
Visit the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Austria’s Number 1. Museum (TripAdvisor Travellers Choice 2016), and admire magnificent works of art past and present. From Monet to Picasso the Albertina in Vienna houses works from some of the greatest artists in history, definitely worth a visit. An extensive insight into Natural History is on display at the Naturhistorisches Museum, including the 29,500-year old Venus of Willendorf.
Explore the grandeur of the Imperial Palace (Hofburg), first opened in 1279, and the Habsburgs by pouring over the Silver Collection with exclusive details of Empress Elisabeth too.
The musical prowess of former residents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart & Ludwig van Beethoven is perfectly performed in the equally spectacular State Opera House, be sure to tune in. As Europe’s second largest theatre the Burgtheater (pictured) in Vienna is an unmissable stop on the culture tour, putting on around 800 performances each year. A ride upon the iconic Vienna ferris wheel at Prater Amusement Park affords panoramic views of this elegant city, beautifully illuminated in the night sky.
Vienna is a landlocked city, however, the River Danube courses its way through Austria’s capital and on it’s banks you can find pop-up bars and streets cafes. Situated in a picturesque square the Market at Karmelitermarkt is steeped in history, here you can rub shoulders with locals and maybe bag a bargain too. If you’re looking for a quirky spot for an evening drink stop by one of the Under the Bridge Railway Bars, frequented by locals with a charming atmosphere and sounds of trains rolling by overhead.
