Mallorca is justifiably renowned for its beautiful beaches and warm weather, but there is a lot more to this picturesque island than first meets the eye. Take a hike to the stunning mountains of Serra de Tramuntana, in 2011 it was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO for its great Physical and Cultural significance. Its highest peak is the Puig Major (1,445 meters & the highest mountain in the Balearic Islands), closely followed by the Puig de Massanella, which reaches 1,364 meters.
Visit the historic old town of Alcudia on Tuesday and Sunday mornings to experience the local market. Here you’ll find everything from fresh local farmer’s produce to classic souvenirs and little treasures awaiting your discovery. After the market explore the walled old town itself, wandering along the ancient city walls that once protected the locals from pirates. In the evenings catch the land train or enjoy a pleasurable stroll back along the coastline from the picturesque town of Alcudia.
It’s time to soak up the blissful Mediterranean sunshine, so let’s not head off the beaten track but rather, visit the TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice (2017) winner Playa de Alcudia. This beach is fantastic with shallow gently shelving waters making it every families ideal beach. Stroll along the soft white sands while the gentle turquoise waves whirl and sway around your ankles for somewhat 50 meters out. Boat trips are available from the pier along the shore. Dare to embrace your inner child and enjoy the water sports available throughout the day?
Take in the fresh air at the historical old hermitage 509 meters above sea level at the highest point of Serra De Llevant. You’ll be in awe of the breath taking surroundings at Sanctuary de Sant Salvador Felanitx, an old monastery atop a hill with panoramic views across the entire Island just waiting for the avid photographer to capture the Island’s beauty in its entirety. The monastery, up until 1992, was run by monks but nowadays is run by two Mallorcan families who operate a tasty restaurant, perfect for a spot of lunch!
The depth of history and culture of Palma often takes visitors by surprise: it boasts the island’s best restaurants, shops and nightlife, as well as a thriving arts scene and lively café culture. Palma overlooks the sparking blue seas of the Mediterranean where boats bob on the calm waters of a large marina. Explore this enchanting city from its grand central Cathedral to the historic Bellver Castle and be sure to sample tapas in many of the local bars and restaurants nearby to the marina. The Spanish produce some of the best olive oil in the world – it will be fresh and peppery drizzled over your meal.
