The medieval town of Rhodes boasts beautiful architecture including castles built in the Byzantine period, Gothic churches, mosques and public baths all presenting a strong reminder of the island’s history. Rhodes old town has also been a UNESCO World Heritage site for nearly 30 years!
Rhodes the Island of the Knights
Rhodes is the largest and capital of the Dodecanese islands and was conquered in 1309 by the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem and even to this day it is still known as the Islands of the Knights.
Rhodes enjoys a Mediterranean climate of long hot summers with the month of August generally one of the warmest with temperatures averaging 28 degrees Celsius. Sun Beach Holiday Club is situated on Ialysos beach so welcomes a refreshing sea breeze, clear warm waters and shade within the beautifully maintained gardens.

Sun Beach Holiday Club offers superb leisure and entertainment facilities for the whole family. Enjoy a swim in the two large freshwater swimming pools lined with palm trees. Kids have their own pool to splash around in whilst adults can unwind on a sun lounger with their favourite book. Fun can be had playing ping-pong, table tennis and mini-golf too. Throughout the summer months the complex provides adventurous activities for children in the supervised mini-club and two playgrounds keeping the little ones entertained for hours on end. For fitness enthusiasts there is a choice of two tennis courts and football court or work up a sweat in the gym and try a game of volleyball.
A choice of three restaurants serving mouth-watering International and Mediterranean cuisine invite guests to enjoy the atmosphere of outdoor dining in the warm summer air and delightful views of the gardens and sea. Throughout the day guests can enjoy a casual buffet meal and something light in the snack bar or savour the fresh dishes and special moments in the à la carte restaurant. Colossus of Rhodes
Rhodes and its incredible history are most famous for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Over two thousand years ago the people of Rhodes built a bronze statue standing one hundred and ten feet high near the harbour entrance, in honour of the God of Helios. The Colossus was a proud symbol of the Greek people’s victory and freedom, it stood at the harbour entrance for fifty-six years until an earthquake destroyed the statue in 226 BC.
The old town centre is a maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient stone walls leading to beautiful squares filled with quaint cafes and elderly locals sitting under orange trees. For those wanting to explore Rhodes, a trip to the Palace of Grand Masters of Knights was voted as one of the best things to see by TripAdvisor visitors (2016). The palace is a medieval castle situated in the city of Rhodes and features some of the most spectacular Gothic architecture in the region.
Sun Beach Holiday Club provides direct access to Ialysos beach and a variety of activities. Hire a sunbed and umbrella to simply feel the warm sun and gentle breeze caress your skin or get a bird’s eye view of the coastline on an exhilarating water-boat parachute ride. Stroll along the beach to discover charming tavernas serving the traditional fried fish with skorthalia, a mashed potato and garlic dish. The locals will no doubt make you feel like a long, lost friend as the Greeks are known for their friendly hospitality.
Nature lovers will be enchanted by a day out at “Petaloudes” (butterfly) the valley of the butterflies. Located in a beautiful valley with winding pathways, wooden bridges crossing trickling streams and waterfalls flowing into emerald green rock pools. The lush green oriental sweetgum trees provide refreshing shade from the heat of the day. May to August are the best months to view the fully-grown Callimorpha Quadripunctaria butterfly species within their natural environment. Visitors can absorb the atmosphere of the beautiful forest in cafes and admire the views of the island from tavernas in the nearby traditional villages.
Lindos town is another popular village to visit with its 4,000-year-old Acropolis. The clifftop Temple of Athena Lindia overlooks Byzantine ruins and the 14th Century Castle of the Knights of St John. Traditional white-washed houses surround the monumental builds and overlook the bay and turquoise sea. Lindos town was awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence (2016) for being a unique and memorable place to visit.
Fancy island hopping? take a boat trip to the peaceful and tranquil island of Symi, considered as one of the most picturesque Dodecanese islands. As your vessel enters Symi town, visitors will adore the brightly coloured buildings and noble churches. Stroll along the harbour, lined with cafes, restaurants and shops overlooking the traditional fishing boats that once upon time dived to collect sponges from the ocean floor. Climb steep steps or hire a donkey to upper Chorio (village), the walk will work up an appetite to enjoy a fantastic meal in one of the many restaurants overlooking the archipelago.
The island of Rhodes offers something for everyone, from warm weather, historical experiences, beautiful beaches and countryside as well as fine dining and buzzing nightlife in the town. What more can one ask for?
