Cayman Islands, “Las Tortugas”

In the year 1503, when Christopher Columbus discovered the Cayman Islands, turtles inhabited them and so the islands were given the Spanish nickname, “Las Tortugas”, meaning turtles. Even to the present day, the islands honour the turtle as a national symbol.
